The Gospel of Matthew tells of wise men, or Magi, who followed a star to Bethlehem and offered the child Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The visit is celebrated at Epiphany, and it became one of the most popular subjects in Christian art, painted by Renaissance masters, Baroque painters and Eastern Christian icon painters alike.
