Before leaving for Jerusalem to be crucified, Jesus says farewell to his mother—an ideal subject for meditation that would have been paired with the Virgin and Child to form a folding work that could be carried on a journey. Gerard David was also an illuminator of books, which explains this picture’s delicacy of execution. The frame is modern.
