Pope Benedict XVI died on December 31, 2022, at the age of 95 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in Vatican City. He had been Pope Emeritus since his resignation in 2013 due to poor health. Pope Francis, his successor, announced a decline in his health on December 28 and asked for prayers. Benedict's body will lie in state in St. Peter's Basilica from January 2-5, 2023, and his funeral will take place on January 5, 2023. This marks the end of a period where two living popes were present in Vatican City.
