The funeral of Pope Benedict XVI was held on Thursday, January 5th, 2023 in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican[1][2]. The funeral was presided over by Pope Francis and attended by around 50,000 people[1].

The body of Pope Benedict XVI had been lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica from 2 to 4 January 2023, during which almost 200,000 mourners paid their respects[1]. He was clothed in red vestments for the occasion[1]. The booklet for Benedict's funeral Mass was released on 3 January[1].

After the funeral service, Pope Benedict XVI was interred in a private ceremony in the crypt underneath St. Peter's Basilica, in the same tomb that had previously been occupied by Pope John Paul II[1].
