This is a woodblock made by a follower of the German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). A Rosary is a string with knots or beads used in prayer. Each prayer of the rosary is arranged in sets of several prayers (Hail Marys, Lord's Prayer and a Glory Be). During the recitation of each set, thought is given to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recall events in the lives of Jesus and of Mary. The crucified Christ is shown here in the centre of a Rosary. Above him is God the father, several angels and the Virgin Mary. to the left and right of Christ are various Saints, persons from the old and New Testament, the twelve apostles etc. On the top left of the woodblock is the mass of saint Gregory, on the top right is saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. at the bottom are angels saving virtuous souls from damnation.
