Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France[1]. She is often depicted in prayer with a rosary or appealing to the Holy Virgin[2]. St. Bernadette of Lourdes, original name Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, was beatified in 1925 and canonized by Pope Pius XI in December 1933[3]. This little nun is venerated by tens of thousands of Catholic worshipers throughout the world[4].
