Saint John the Evangelist 1771 by Francisco Bayeu - Public Domain Catholic Painting

The pendentives of the dome of the collegiate church of La Granja in Segovia, Spain were adorned with sketches by Francisco Bayeu. He took over the project initiated by Giambattista Tiepolo, who passed away in 1770. Bayeu's contributions brought harmony, solidity, and clarity to the compositions, reflecting the artistic principles he learned during his training with Mengs. The sketches depict three of the evangelists being inspired by angels while writing, and Luke, the patron saint of painters, is portrayed holding a painting with the Virgin and Child. This imagery not only showcases Bayeu's skill as an artist but also reflects the religious and artistic significance of the church.
