Betre Mariam Monastery is located on the Zege Peninsula, which is situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The monastery was founded by Abune Betre Mariam, one of the "seven stars" who were pioneers in evangelizing the Lake Tana region. He founded Mehal Zege Giyorgies in 1264. The monastery houses brightly colored ceremonial robes and a 16th-century painting of the Madonna. Betre Mariam Monastery is one of six monastic churches on the Zege Peninsula.
