The painter Ventura Salimbeni was active in Siena and Rome, leaving a group of seven etchings of religious subjects, many produced while working on Vatican frescos in the early 1590s. This print was copied several times in the early 17th century, with one version cropped tightly around the main figures, excluding Saint Joseph.
