In this large devotional panel, the condemned Christ stumbles as he drags the Cross through the city of Jerusalem to the site of his Crucifixion. His mother and disciples—passing through the city gate at left—watch sadly and console one another. Christ and his followers are taunted by crowds of soldiers and civilians. Their spears, halberds, and clubs mark the procession's progress against the gilt background, and their grimaces show physical evidence of their spiritual disorder. This harrowing scene provoked such a powerful reaction in some medieval viewers that they scourged some of the antagonists' faces.
