St. Lawrence O'Toole was born in County Kildare, Ireland around 1128. He was given up as a hostage at age 10 and suffered inhuman treatment until his father intervened. St. Lawrence was known for his piety, charity, and prudence, and was respected as a negotiator. He died on November 14, 1180, and was canonized in 1225 by Honorius III.
