Saint-Denis Clerestory Windows (2005, France) - Catholic Stock Photo
Details:
Saint-Denis Church is located in France. Saint-Denis is a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, and the church is known for its historical and cultural significance. It is considered to be the first Gothic cathedral ever built and is the final resting place of many French kings and queens.
In 1264 under Abbot Matthew, the dark Romanesque nave was rebuilt using the latest Rayonnant Gothic style, which reduced the wall area to an absolute minimum. The upper facades of the transepts were filled with two spectacular rose windows. The identity of the architect or master mason remains unknown.
