According to the Acts and Martyrdom of St. Matthew, when Matthew was in another country preaching, the local pagans had him burned alive for his denial of their gods. However, the fire burned all their golden idols first and then Matthew died, after his death faithful Christians saw him rising up to heaven with a golden crown, led by twelve men in shining garments.
