Saint Philomena is venerated in the Catholic Church as a young virgin martyr whose remains were discovered in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome in 1802. According to accounts based largely on private revelations received by Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù in 1833, Philomena was a Greek princess who had consecrated her virginity to Christ. The story continues that the Roman Emperor Diocletian desired her, and upon her refusal, she was subjected to various tortures—including scourging, being drowned with an anchor, and shot with arrows, all of which she miraculously survived—before ultimately being beheaded around 304 AD.
