In Ethiopian Orthodox art, the Nativity scene is rendered with vivid, symbolic colors and stylized, flat figures that convey the spiritual significance of Christ’s birth. Mary is usually shown centrally positioned and often depicted reclining or seated with the Christ child nearby, both adorned with halos as symbols of holiness. Angels stand or hover in attendance, while animals, shepherds, and occasionally the Magi gather reverently around. The compositions highlight a sense of sacred harmony, with large expressive eyes on the figures reflecting spiritual wisdom and insight. The focus is less on outward realism and more on conveying the mystery of the Incarnation, inviting the viewer into a meditative reflection on the divine event at the heart of Christian faith.
