St George And The Dragon (19th Century) by Alexander Von Bensa - Public Domain Catholic Painting
Details:
Saint George and the Monster is a tale about Saint George taming and destroying a dragon that wanted human sacrifices. According to legend, the dragon used to exact tribute from peasants. When they ran out of cattle and trinkets for the dragon, they began sacrificing a person once a year. This was acceptable to the locals until the next sacrifice, a princess, was chosen. The saint then saves the princess who has been chosen as the next offering.
Alexander von Bensa studied in 1838/39 at the landscape school of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender. His first exhibition took place in 1841 as part of the Academy exhibition. Later exhibitions followed in the Künstlerhaus and the Austrian Kunstverein in Vienna.
