According to the New Testament, Bartholomew was one of Jesus' twelve apostles. He is said to have been martyred for converting King Polymius of Armenia to Christianity. He has also been identified as Nathanael or Nathaniel, who appears in the Gospel of John when Philip introduces Jesus to him, though some modern commentators disagree with this identification.
Lucas van Leyden, also known as Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, was a Dutch painter and woodcut and engraving printmaker. Lucas van Leyden was a talented engraver and one of the first Dutch practitioners of genre painting. Lucas was the painter Huygh Jacobsz's son. He was born, died, and spent most of his time in Leiden.
