Pope Clement IX, whose original name was Giulio Rospigliosi, was born Jan. of 1600 in Pistoia, Tuscany and died Dec. 9, 1669, in Rome). He was pope from 1667 to 1669.

Clement IX served as papal ambassador to Spain from 1644 to 1653 and cardinal and secretary of state under Pope Alexander VII. He was elected pope on June 20, 1667, and consecrated as Clement IX six days later. His reign was dominated by his efforts to resolve disputes with France and by his assistance to Venice in the unsuccessful attempt to save Crete from the Ottomans.
