Betre Mariam Monastery is located on the Zege Peninsula, which is situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana in Ethiopia[1]. The monastery was founded by Abune Betre Mariam, one of the "seven stars" who were pioneers in evangelizing the Lake Tana region. He founded Mehal Zege Giyorgies in 1264[1]. The monastery houses brightly colored ceremonial robes and a 16th-century painting of the Madonna[1]. Betre Mariam Monastery is one of six monastic churches on the Zege Peninsula[1].

Debre Maryam Monastery is another monastery located at Lake Tana's Zegie Peninsula. It was built by Emperor Tewodros in the 19th century[1]. Debre Maryam Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries found at Lake Tana's Zegie peninsula and has brightly colored ceremonial robes and a 16th-century painting of the Madonna[5].
