Jesus and the Centurion (1571) by Paolo Veronese - Public Domain Catholic Painting

Details

This is another favorite painting of mine. The subject of the painting is Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10. According to the bible a Roman centurion approached Jesus for help because a servant of his was sick. Jesus offered to go to the house of the centurion to perform the healing, but the centurion suggested that Jesus should perform the healing from a distance. Jesus was amazed, praised the faith of the centurion and told him that it would be done. The centurion and Roman soldiers are dressed in a historical fantasy style uniforms which was common in these paintings. Veronese painted this story several times, this is the Prado-version.
