Christ Appearing to the Disciples (Possibly 15th century, Romania) Unknown Artist - Public Domain Catholic Painting

Details:

This panel was painted for a multipaneled altarpiece believed to be from Szászrégen in Transylvania, in present-day Romania. The piece was painted by the same artist who created the nearby paintings Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego, Seven Fat and Seven Lean Cows, and Two Men and Stocks. Each of the panels on the altarpiece likely corresponded with another image on the panel, strengthening the meaning of each story by drawing thematic parallels between the Old and New Testaments. These pairings are called typological pairs and are common in medieval and Renaissance art. This painting depicts Christ appearing to the disciples after the Resurrection. While there were 12 disciples, only five are depicted here.
