A cardinal is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church[1], known as princes of the Church and typically holding the title for life[1]. They constitute the College of Cardinals and their most solemn responsibility is to elect a new pope[1].
Eduard von Steinle was a German historical painter who was a member of the Nazarene movement, a group of German painters who were based in Rome. Steinle received commissions for paintings in Frankfurt, including work in the Kaisersaal and a chapel at Rheineck Castle. He became a professor of historical painting at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt and was known for his religious and monumental fresco paintings, as well as his illustrations of Shakespeare and works by Brentano. Steinle died in Frankfurt in 1886.
